The Plan

Since putting the EngD to bed, making the most of my sudden freedom has been frustratingly tempered by my Anglo-Saxon work ethic riling at the lack of a productive output. Well, now I’ve had a great offer, grabbed it with both hands and begged to bring the start forward to August. It’s time to put my money where my mouth is, reign in the party calendar and have a month of proper adventure.

I’m going to take my white bike and dip it in the white sea.

Tunnel to France, then Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Russia. Here I head north up to the Murmansk Oblast, the Arctic Circle and the White sea. Breaking from Haynes manual tradition, return is not simply to reverse of this procedure. Instead, I will loop anticlockwise around the Baltic crossing the border into Norway. Sweden follows, then over the bridge to Denmark then catch the ferry back to the UK. I’ll link together as many friends and friends of friends as I can to return calm, relaxed and ready for life’s next chapter.

This site should allow me to keep you up to date with my progress in a more real-time way than the inevitable postcards. I may even be able to show you pictures.

  1. I know people in many of those places! Berlin, Riga, Stockholm, maybe Copenhagen. (Also Oslo and Trondheim but not strictly on the route). I can put you in touch with them if you like.

That looks like a pretty epic journey.

    Take many photos!

You’re very welcome to de-tour via Drammen or Torpo, otherwise we could try to link up in Sweden if you like. Looking forward to hearing about your travels 🙂
